"VOGELFREI" CD Review |
Wow...this CD by Bavarian Folk Rock group "IRXN" is one pwerful CD!!! It is sung in their native Bavarian idiom, which gives the CD a poetic feel, the way music should sound when it is about life, which most of this CD is. NO, I don't understand Bavarian idiom, but I understand the incredible music of:
Berni Maisberger: lead vocals, guitar;
German Heimrath: violine, back vocals;
Markus Traurig: drums, cajon, back vocals;
Peter Gschwandtner: bass, bass-tuba, contra-bass, trumpet; and
Reinhold Alshreimer: electric guitar.
I asked Reinhold to translate the song titles to me and once I knew what the song were about I understood them completely just through the rhythm of the music and the tone of Berni's fantastic voice!!! German, the violinist, plays the violin like none other and Reinhold really gets into his e-guitar. Raw power stems from all of them and melds into the "Spirit of Bavarian Folk Rock"!!!
The songs translate to:
01. "Stehaufmandl": 'Tumbler' (refering to the toy but in the meaning covering one that never gives up and always is coming back to surface)
02. "Vogelfrei": (Title Track)'ostracized', or'free as a bird'
03. "Anders leb'n": 'Live different' (a song encouraging to change one's life )
04. "Ewigkeit blüaht": ' Eternity blossoms' (a song 'bout time and the end of life)
05. "La Rotta": Is an old Rennaissance tune from Tilman Susato, we kept the original Italian title which stands for 'defeat' in a battle
06. "Veitstanz": 'Demon's dance' (Veit is a named nature demon in Upper Bavarian myths)
07. "Babylon": 'Babylon' (refers in title to the bible story of total confusion which is compared to nowadays confusion in our societies)
08. "Palästina-Lied": 'Song for Palaestine' (a dedication to all people doing their best to get peace into the battlefield around the 'holy land' - Palestinians, Jews, Christs - all!)
09. "Alle Manner": 'All men' a word play with the original Mediaeval title 'Allemande' which is a slow pace dance in original, but a bit modified in speed by us :-)
10. "Pyromanien": 'Pyromania' (an invented country where one burns the other - dedicated to all those who died in Germany by violation against one's religion, sex, colour, ...)
11. "Fremder Inder": 'Foreign Indian' ( a song about Bavarian tradition vs.
new inhabitants and the intolerance of many natives against all new)
12. "Wuiderer": 'Poacher' (the original song is an old northern tune called hunter's quadrille - we feel poacher is far more applicable to us)
13. "Flügelkuss": 'Winged Kiss' (just a very smooth love song)
You will not be disappointed with this CD...buy one for yourself and one for a friend!!! As the song "Anders Leb'n" means live different...be brave and check out this CD...do something different!!!
